A brother asked a monk, 'If a brother brings me some words from outside, do you, father, want me to say to him, 'Do not bring them in to me?''

The monk said to him, 'Do not.'

3 ⲡⲉϫⲉⲡⲥⲟⲛ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉⲉⲧⲃⲉⲟⲩ ·

The brother said to him, 'Why?'

The monk said to him, 'Because we ourselves have not been able to observe this, lest, while we say to our companion, 'Don't do this,' we find ourselves later doing this.'

The brother said to him, 'What else is it necessary to do?'

6 ⲡⲉϫⲉⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ ϫⲉⲉⲛⲟⲩⲉϣⲡⲕⲁⲣⲱϥ ·

The monk said, 'What we desire is silence,

7 ⲡⲉϥⲥⲙⲟⲧ ⲣⲱϣⲉ ⲉⲡⲉⲧϩⲓⲧⲟⲩⲱⲛ

its example is enough for our companion.'
