1 ⲁⲩϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲉⲧⲃⲉⲁⲡⲁ ⲡⲁⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ϫⲉⲙⲉϥϭⲉⲡⲏ ⲉⲥⲉⲏⲣⲡ .

They said about Abba Paphnutius that he never hastens to drink wine.

2 ⲉϥⲙⲟⲟϣⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲉϫⲛⲟⲩⲕⲟⲗⲗⲏⲅⲓⲟⲛ ⲛⲗⲏⲥⲧⲏⲥ

But while walking on one occasion he came upon a band of bandits

3 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥϭⲛⲧⲟⲩ ⲉⲩⲥⲱ .

and he found them drinking.

4 ⲁϥⲥⲟⲩⲱⲛϥ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲉⲧⲟ ⲛⲁⲛϫⲱϫ

And he knew him, that is the one who is head,

5 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉϥⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ϫⲉⲙⲉϥⲥⲉⲏⲣⲡ ·

and while knowing that he never drinks wine

6 ⲁϥⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ϩⲛⲟⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲛϩⲓⲥⲉ

he saw him in a great weariness

7 ⲁϥⲙⲟⲩϩ ⲛⲟⲩⲁⲡⲟⲧ ⲛⲏⲣⲡ

(and) filled a cup of wine

8 ⲉⲣⲉ ⲧⲉϥⲥⲏϥⲉ ϩⲛⲧⲉϥϭⲓϫ ·

while his sword (is) in his hand

9 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲙⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ

and told the old man

10 ϫⲉⲉⲕⲧⲙⲥⲱ ϯⲛⲁϩⲟⲧⲃⲉⲕ .

“If you don't drink I will kill you.”

11 ⲁϥⲉⲓⲙⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ ϫⲉⲉϥⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲛⲧⲟⲗⲏ ⲛⲧⲉⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ

He knew, that is, the old man, that it's to do the commandment of God that he wants

12 ⲉϥⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉϯϩⲏⲩ ⲙⲙⲟϥ

and wanting to gain him

13 ⲁϥϫⲓⲧϥ ⲁϥⲥⲟⲟϥ .

he took it (and) he drank it.

14 ⲡⲁⲛϫⲱϫ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲗⲏⲥⲧⲏⲥ ⲁϥⲙⲉⲧⲁⲛⲟⲉⲓ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ

But the head of the bandits, he repented saying:

15 ϫⲉⲕⲱ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲡⲁⲉⲓⲱⲧ ϫⲉⲁⲓϯϩⲓⲥⲉ ⲛⲁⲕ .

“forgive me my father for I have made you suffer”.

16 ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ

He said to him, that is the old man:

17 ϫⲉϯⲡⲓⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ⲉⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ϫⲉϥⲛⲁⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲛⲁⲕ ⲛⲟⲩⲛⲁ ⲉⲧⲃⲉⲡⲉⲓⲁⲡⲟⲧ ⲛⲏⲣⲡ ϩⲙⲡⲉⲓⲱⲛϩ ⲙⲛⲡⲉⲧⲛⲏⲩ .

“I trust in God that he will do you charity for this cup of wine in this life and the one that's coming”.

18 ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲁⲣⲭⲏⲗⲏⲥⲧⲏⲥ

He said to him, that is the head-bandit:

19 ϫⲉϯⲡⲓⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ⲉⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ϫⲉϫⲓⲛⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩ ⲛϯⲛⲁⲣ ⲡⲉⲧϩⲟⲟⲩ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲗⲁⲁⲩ .

“I trust in God that from now I won't do wrong to anyone.”

20 ⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲇⲉ ⲁϥϫⲡⲟ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛⲧⲕⲟⲗⲗⲏⲅⲓⲟⲛ ⲧⲏⲣⲥ

And the old man, he acquired for himself the whole band,

21 ϫⲉⲁϥⲕⲱ ⲛⲥⲱϥ ⲙⲡⲉϥⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉⲧⲃⲉⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ .

for he left his desire behind him for God.
