1 ⲥⲟⲛ ⲥⲛⲁⲩ ⲕⲁⲧⲁⲥⲁⲣⲝ ⲁⲩⲃⲱⲕ ⲉⲩϩⲉⲛⲉⲉⲧⲉ .

Two brothers according to the flesh went to a monastery.

2 ⲡⲟⲩⲁ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲟⲩⲁⲥⲕⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲡⲉ .

One of them was an ascetic.

3 ⲡⲕⲉⲟⲩⲁ ⲟⲩⲥⲧⲙⲏⲧ ⲡⲉ ⲉⲙⲁⲧⲉ ·

The other was very obedient.

4 ⲉⲣϣⲁⲛⲡⲉⲓⲱⲧ ϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉⲁⲣⲓ ⲟⲩϩⲱⲃ

If the father told him to do something,

5 ϣⲁϥⲁⲁϥ .

he did it.

6 .. ⲟⲩⲱⲙ … ⲛϣⲱⲣⲡ ϣⲁϥ …………. ………….

7 ⲉⲧⲃⲉⲧⲉϥⲙⲛⲧⲥⲧⲙⲏⲧ

because of his obedience.

8 ⲡⲉϥⲥⲟⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁⲥⲕⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲁⲩⲧⲟⲃⲥϥ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲣⲟϥ .

But his ascetic brother was goaded by it.

9 ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲛϩⲏⲧϥ

He said to himself,

10 ϫⲉϯⲛⲁⲇⲟⲕⲓⲙⲁⲍⲉ ⲙⲡⲁⲓ

“I will test him

11 ⲧⲁⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉⲟⲩⲥⲧⲙⲏⲧ ⲡⲉ .

and I will see if he is obedient.”

12 ⲁϥϯⲡⲉϥⲟⲩⲟⲓ ⲉⲡⲉϥⲉⲓⲱⲧ

He made his way to his father

13 ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ

and he said,

14 ϫⲉⲧⲛⲛⲟⲟⲩ ⲡⲁⲥⲟⲛ ⲛⲙⲙⲁⲓ

“Send my brother and me

15 ⲧⲁⲣⲉⲛⲃⲱⲕ ϣⲁⲡⲉⲓⲧⲟⲡⲟⲥ

and we will go to that place.”

16 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲡⲉⲓⲱⲧ ⲕⲁⲁⲩ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ .

And the father gave them permission.

17 ⲁϥϥⲓⲧϥ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲁⲥⲕⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲉϥⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉⲡⲉⲓⲣⲁⲍⲉ ⲙⲙⲟϥ

Wishing to test him, the ascetic took him

18 ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ϩⲓϫⲙⲡⲓⲉⲣⲟ .

and he went down beside the river.

19 ⲛⲉⲩϣⲟⲟⲡ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉ ϩⲙⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛϭⲓϩⲉⲛⲙⲥⲁϩ ⲉⲛⲁϣⲱⲟⲩ .

In that place, there were many crocodiles.

20 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ

And he said to him,

21 ϫⲉⲃⲱⲕ ⲉⲡⲉⲥⲏⲧ ⲉⲡⲓⲉⲣⲟ ⲛⲅⲡⲉⲣⲁ .

“Go down to the river and pass through.”

22 ⲡⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ

So he went

23 ⲁⲩⲉⲓ ⲛϭⲓⲛⲉⲙⲥⲁϩ

and the crocodiles came

24 ⲁⲩⲗⲱϫϩ ⲙⲡⲉϥⲥⲱⲙⲁ .

and they crushed his body.

25 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙⲡⲟⲩⲃⲗⲁⲡⲧⲉⲓ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲗⲁⲁⲩ .

And they did not hurt him at all.

26 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥⲛⲁⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲁⲥⲕⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ

When the ascetic saw, he said,

27 ϫⲉⲁⲙⲟⲩ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ϩⲙⲡⲓⲉⲣⲟ .

“Come out of the river.”

28 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲩⲙⲟⲟϣⲉ

And as they were walking,

29 ⲁⲩϭⲓⲛⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲉϥⲛⲏϫ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲙⲡϩⲟⲟⲩⲧⲛ .

they found a body lying in the road.

30 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉϫⲉⲡⲁⲥⲕⲏⲧⲏⲥ

And the ascetic said,

31 ϫⲉⲉϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲟⲩⲛⲧⲁⲕ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲟⲩϭⲓⲛⲙⲓϣⲉ

“If you have an [old thing]

32 ⲙⲁⲣⲛⲛⲟⲩϫⲉ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉϫⲱϥ .

let us throw it over him.”

33 ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲉⲧⲉⲟⲩⲛⲧⲁϥ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲧⲙⲛⲧⲥⲧⲙⲏⲧ ,

The one who had obedience said,

34 ϫⲉⲙⲁⲗⲗⲟⲛ ⲙⲁⲣⲛϣⲗⲏⲗ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉϫⲱϥ

“Let us pray for him instead.

35 ⲙⲉϣⲁⲕ ϥⲛⲁⲧⲱⲟⲩⲛ

Perhaps he will arise.”
