For when I lived a while in Pemje (Oxyrhynchus) near an elder who performed charity, a widow came to him asking him for a little grain.

He said to her, “Go and bring a measure and I will measure it for you.”

So she brought it

He made the widow ashamed.

But after the widow left, I said to him, “My father and elder, Did you give grain to the widow?”

But he said, “No.”

I said to him, “If you were giving it to her in charity, why did you assess the measure and make the widow ashamed?”
