1 ⲡⲥⲟⲛ ⲇⲉ ϥϯ ⲛⲁϥ
And the brother, he gives to him
2 ⲉϣⲁϥⲣϩⲏⲕⲉ ⲉⲡⲉϩⲟⲩⲟ .
while he became increasingly poor.
3 ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲥⲟⲛ ⲁϥϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲟⲩⲁ ⲛⲛϩⲗⲗⲟ
And the brother went and told one of the elders.
4 ⲡⲉϫⲉⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉⲉϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲕⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲛⲥⲱⲓ ⲙⲡⲣⲕⲟⲧⲕ ⲉϯ ⲛⲁϥ .
And the elder said to him, If you want to obey me, don't keep giving to him.
5 ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲁϫⲓⲥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉⲡⲁⲥⲟⲛ ⲙⲡⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲧⲟⲩⲛⲧⲁⲓ ⲁⲓϯ ⲛⲁⲕ .
But say to him, My brother, at the time when I had (anything), I gave (it) to you.
6 ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ϩⲱⲱⲕ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲕⲛⲁϭⲛⲧϥ ϩⲙⲡⲉⲕϩⲱⲃ ⲁⲛⲓⲧϥ ⲛⲁⲓ .
Now for your part, whatever you earn in your work, bring it to me.
7 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉⲧⲉϥⲛⲁⲛⲧϥ ϫⲓⲧϥ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲧϥ .
And whatever he brings, take it from him
8 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲉⲕⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲛϩⲏⲧϥ ϫⲉⲟⲩⲛϣⲙⲙⲟ . ⲏ ⲟⲩϩⲏⲕⲉ ⲛϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲧⲁⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ . ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲅⲕⲱⲣϣ ⲉⲣⲟⲟⲩ ⲉⲧⲣⲉⲩϣⲗⲏⲗ ⲉϫⲱϥ .
and in the place in which you know there is a stranger or a poor elder, give it to him and ask them to pray for him.
9 ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲥⲟⲛ ⲁϥⲉⲓⲣⲉ ϩⲓⲛⲁⲓ .
So the brother went and did these things.
10 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥⲉⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲉϥⲥⲟⲛ ⲛⲕⲱⲥⲙⲓⲕⲟⲛ ⲁϥϣⲁϫⲉ ⲛⲙⲙⲁϥ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲧϩⲉ ⲛⲧⲁϥϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛϭⲓⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ . […]
When his worldly brother came, he spoke to him in the manner that the elder had said …
11 ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲉϥⲗⲩⲡⲏ
he went away sad.
12 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲓⲥϩⲏⲏⲧⲉ ϩⲙⲡϣⲟⲣⲡ ⲛϩⲟⲟⲩ ⲁϥϫⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲙⲡⲕⲏⲡⲟⲥ ⲛϩⲉⲛⲟⲩⲟⲟⲧⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲁϥⲛⲧⲟⲩ ⲛⲁϥ .
And behold, on the first day he took from the garden some vegetables to eat and gave them to him.
13 ⲁϥϫⲓⲧⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲉϥⲥⲟⲛ ⲁϥⲧⲁⲁⲩ ⲛⲛϩⲗⲗⲟ .
But his brother took them and gave them to the elders
14 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥⲡⲁⲣⲁⲕⲁⲗⲉⲓ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲉⲧⲣⲉⲩϣⲗⲏⲗ ⲉϫⲱϥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥϫⲓⲥⲙⲟⲩ ⲁϥⲕⲟⲧϥ ⲉⲡⲉϥⲏⲓ .
and asked them to pray for him, and he received a blessing and returned to his house.
15 ⲙⲛⲛⲥⲱⲥ ⲟⲛ ⲁϥⲉⲓⲛⲉ ⲛϩⲉⲛⲟⲩⲟⲟⲧⲉ ⲙⲡⲓⲥⲉ . ⲙⲛϣⲟⲙⲛⲧ ⲛⲟⲉⲓⲕ .
After this, again he brought some vegetables to cook and three loaves of bread.
16 ⲁϥϫⲓⲧⲟⲩ ⲟⲛ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲥⲟⲛ [………]
Again, [the brother] took them …
17 ⲧϩⲉ ⲛ [……….]
just as …
18 ϫⲓⲥⲙⲟⲩ [………]
[he] received a blessing …
19 ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲇⲉ [………]
And he came …
20 ⲛⲥⲟⲡ .
[another] time
21 ⲁϥⲛ […….]
and he brought …
22 ⲙⲛⲟⲩⲏⲣⲡ ⲙⲛ […..]
and wine and …
23 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥⲛⲁⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲥⲟⲛ ⲁϥⲣϣⲡⲏⲣⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥⲧⲉϩⲙⲛⲉⲥⲛⲏⲩ ⲛϩⲏⲕⲉ ⲁϥϯⲙⲧⲟⲛ ⲛⲁⲩ
When the brother saw, he was amazed and he summoned the poor brothers and set them at ease.
24 ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲙⲡⲉϥⲥⲟⲛ ϫⲉⲕⲣⲭⲣⲉⲓⲁ ⲛϩⲉⲛⲕⲟⲩⲓ ⲛⲟⲉⲓⲕ .
He said to his brother, 'Do you need a little bread?'
25 ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ϫⲉⲙⲙⲟⲛ ⲡⲁⲥⲟⲛ .
He said, 'No, my brother.
26 ⲙⲡⲛⲁⲩ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲓⲣⲭⲣⲉⲓⲁ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲓϫⲓⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲧⲕ . ⲉϣⲁⲓⲣⲧϩⲉ ⲉⲓϫⲓ ⲛⲟⲩⲕⲱϩⲧ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲡⲁⲏⲓ . ⲁⲩⲱ ϣⲁϥⲟϫⲛϥ .
For at the time when I had need and I received anything from you, I became as if I had received a fire into my house, and it destroyed it.
27 ⲙⲡⲛⲁⲩ ϩⲱⲱϥ ⲉⲓϫⲓⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲧⲕ ⲁⲛ ⲁⲓⲣϩⲟⲩⲟ ϩⲛϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲓⲙ .
But when, on the other hand, I did not receive anything from you, I abounded in everything
28 ⲁⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲥⲙⲟⲩ ⲉⲣⲟⲓ .
and God blessed me.
29 ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲥⲟⲛ ⲁϥⲧⲁⲙⲉⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲉϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲛⲧⲁⲩϣⲱⲡⲉ .
And the brother went and told the elder everything that had happened.
30 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉϫⲉⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ ϫⲉⲛⲅⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲁⲛ ϫⲉⲡϩⲱⲃ ⲙⲡⲙⲟⲛⲁⲭⲟⲥ ⲟⲩⲕⲱϩⲧ ⲡⲉ .
And the elder said, Don't you know that the work of a monk is a fire?
31 ⲙⲁ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲉϣⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ϣⲁϥⲣⲟⲕϩϥ .
Everywhere it goes, it burns.
32 ⲡⲁⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲛϩⲟⲩⲟ ⲁϥϯϩⲏⲩ ⲛⲁϥ [….] ϥϯⲙⲛⲧⲛⲁ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛⲛⲉϥϩⲓⲥⲉ ⲙⲙⲓⲛⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥϫⲓ ⲛⲛⲉϣⲗⲏⲗ ⲛⲛⲉⲧⲟⲩⲁⲁⲃ .
This was a benefit to him, [to make] him give charity from his labors himself, and he received the prayers of the holy ones.
33 ⲧⲁⲓ ⲧⲉ ⲧϩⲉ ⲉⲧⲉϥⲛⲁϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲉϥⲥⲙⲁⲙⲁⲁⲧ .
This is the way that he will be blessed.
