1 ⲁⲟⲩⲥⲟⲛ ϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲟⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲛϩⲗⲗⲟ

A brother said to a noteable Elder:

2 ϫⲉⲉϩⲛⲁⲓ ⲁⲡⲁ ⲉϭⲛⲟⲩϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲕⲁⲧⲁⲡⲁϩⲏⲧ · ⲁⲩⲱ ⲧⲁⲙⲟⲩ ⲛⲙⲙⲁϥ · ⲻ

'Apa, I desire to find an Elder in accordance with my heart and I will die with him.'

3 ⲡⲉϫⲉⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲉⲕϣⲓⲛⲉ · ⲻ

The Elder said to him, 'Rightly you ask!'

4 ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲇⲉ ⲁϥⲧⲱⲕ ⲉ·ϩⲟⲩⲛ ϫⲉⲧⲁⲓ ⲧⲉ ⲧϩⲉ ·

He was confident that it was this way.

5 ⲙⲡⲉϥⲛⲟⲉⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲙⲡⲙⲉⲉⲩⲉ ⲙⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ · ⲻ

But really, he did not understand the teaching of the Elder.

6 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲣⲟϥ · ϫⲉⲧⲁⲓ ⲧⲉ ⲧϩⲉ ⲉⲧⲉϥⲙⲉⲉⲩⲉ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲙⲁⲩⲁⲁϥ ϩⲱⲥ ⲁϥⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲙⲡⲉϥϩⲱⲃ ⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ · ⲻ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ

When the Elder saw in him that this was the manner of his inner thought, as if he understood this matter correctly, he (the elder) said to him:

7 ϫⲉⲉⲕϣⲁⲛϭⲛⲟⲩϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲕⲁⲧⲁⲡⲉⲕⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉⲕⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉϭⲱ ⲛⲙⲙⲁϥ ⲛⲧⲟϥ

'If you find an Elder according to your wish, will you desire to stay with him?'

8 ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ϫⲉⲥⲉ ⲧⲱⲛⲟⲩ · ⲻ

And he replied, 'Yes! Absolutely!'

9 ⲡⲉϫⲉⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ · ϫⲉⲕⲁⲁⲥ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲉⲕⲉⲟⲩⲁϩⲕ ⲛⲥⲁⲡⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲙⲡϩⲗⲗⲟ · ⲁⲗⲗⲁ

The Elder responded, 'You yourself are not following the desire of the Elder. Rather…'
