1 ⲁⲩⲉⲓ ⲉϣⲓⲏⲧ ⲛϭⲓϩⲉⲛⲙⲟⲛⲁⲭⲟⲥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛⲕⲏⲙⲉ ·

Some monks from Egypt came to Scetis.

2 ⲁⲩⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲛϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲙⲡⲉⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲛⲉϩⲕⲟ ⲉⲧⲃⲉⲧⲁⲥⲕⲏⲥⲓⲥ ·

They saw the Elders in their extreme hunger because of the(ir) ascetic practice.

3 ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱⲙ ϩⲛⲟⲩϩⲓⲥⲉ ⲁⲩⲥⲕⲁⲛⲇⲁⲗⲓⲍⲉ · ⲻ

They ate laboriously and the Egyptians were offended.

4 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉⲡⲉⲡⲣⲉⲥⲃⲩⲧⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲓⲙⲉ ⲉⲡⲁⲓ ⲉϥⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉⲧⲁⲗϭⲟⲟⲩ ·

When the presbyter ascertained this (offense), he wished to stop them.

5 ⲁϥⲕⲩⲣⲛⲥⲥⲉ ⲙⲡⲗⲁⲟⲥ ⲛⲧⲉⲕⲕⲗⲏⲥⲓⲁ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ · ϫⲉⲛⲏⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛϫⲉⲗⲕⲧⲉⲧⲛⲁⲥⲕⲏⲥⲓⲥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ · ⲙⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛⲡⲟⲗⲏⲧⲓⲁ ⲛⲉⲥⲛⲏⲩ ·

He preached to the people of the assembly, saying, 'Fast and extend your ascetic and your religious practices, brothers.'

6 ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲁⲩⲉⲓ ⲛϭⲓⲛⲣⲙⲛⲕⲏⲙⲉ · ⲻ

The Egyptians came there (to Scetis).

7 ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲛⲣⲙⲛⲕⲏⲙⲉ ⲉⲃⲱⲕ ⲛⲁⲩ ·

The Egyptians desired to leave them.

8 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲩⲁⲙⲁϩⲧⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ · ⲻ

But they were detained.

9 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟⲩⲛⲛⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲙⲡϣⲟⲣⲡ ⲛⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ · ⲁⲩϩⲕⲟ

When they fasted, they were hungry on the first day.

10 ⲁⲩⲧⲣⲉⲩⲛⲏⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲥⲛⲁⲩ ⲥⲛⲁⲩ

And they made them fast for two days.

11 ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲉⲧϩⲛϣⲓⲏⲧ ⲁⲩⲥⲉⲕⲡⲥⲁⲃⲃⲁⲧⲟⲛ ⲧⲏⲣϥ · ⲻ

The ones who were from Scetis extended their fast all week.

12 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟⲩⲡⲱϩ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲡⲥⲁⲃⲃⲁⲧⲟⲛ ⲁⲩϩⲙⲟⲟⲥ ⲉⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲙⲛⲛϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲛϭⲓⲛⲣⲙⲛⲕⲏⲙⲉ ·

When it was the Sabbath, the Egyptians sat to eat with the Elders.

13 ⲁⲛⲣⲙⲛⲕⲏⲙⲉⲟⲩⲱⲙ ϩⲛⲟⲩϣⲧⲟⲣⲧⲣ · ⲻ

The Egyptians ate hastily.

14 ⲁⲟⲩⲁ ⲛⲛϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲁⲙⲁϩⲧⲉ ⲛⲧⲉϥϭⲓϫ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ · ϫⲉⲟⲩⲱⲙ ϩⲛⲟⲩⲉⲡⲓⲥⲧⲏⲙⲉⲓ ϩⲱⲥⲙⲟⲛⲁⲭⲟⲥ · ⲻ

One of the Elders grabbed his hand, saying 'Eat mindfully like monks!'

15 ⲁⲟⲩⲁ ⲇⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲃⲉⲉⲣⲉⲧⲉϥϭⲓϫ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ · ϫⲉⲕⲁⲁⲧ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲁⲡⲁ ϫⲉⲁⲓⲙⲟⲩ ·

But one of the Egyptians pushed his hand away, saying, 'Leave me, Apa! Because I died!

16 ⲉⲓⲥⲟⲩϩⲉⲃⲇⲟⲙⲁⲥ ⲙⲡⲓⲟⲩⲉⲙⲡⲉⲧϩⲏⲙ ·

For a week I did not eat hot food!'

17 ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉⲉϣϫⲉⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛϣⲱⲥⲙ ⲛⲧⲉⲓϩⲉ ⲧⲏⲣⲥ · ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϫⲉⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛⲛⲏⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ⲥⲛⲁⲩ ⲥⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲓⲉ ⲉⲧⲃⲉⲟⲩ ⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛⲥⲕⲁⲛⲇⲁⲗⲓⲍⲉ ⲉⲛⲉⲥⲛⲏⲩ · ⲛⲁⲓ ⲉⲧϫⲱⲕ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛⲧⲉⲩⲁⲥⲕⲏⲥⲓⲥ ⲛⲧⲉⲓϩⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲛⲓⲙ

He said to them, 'If you are so exhausted in this complete way because you fasted for two days, why were you offended by the brothers who complete their ascetic practice in this way always?'

18 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲩⲙⲉⲧⲁⲛⲟⲉⲓ ⲁⲩϫⲓⲕⲱⲧ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛⲧⲉⲩⲁⲥⲕⲏⲥⲓⲥ ⲁⲩⲃⲱⲕ ϩⲛⲟⲩⲣⲁϣⲉ · ⲻ

And they apologized and learned from their practice and they left joyfully.
