Abba Daniel said, 'When Abba Arsenius was in Scetis, there was a monk there, who was stealing the belongings of the old men.

2 ⲁⲡⲁ ⲁⲣⲥⲉⲛⲓⲟⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲉϥⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉϯϩⲏⲩ ⲛⲧⲉϥⲯⲩⲭⲏ ⲁϥϫⲓⲧϥ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲧⲉϥⲣⲓ · ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉⲛⲕⲁ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲉⲧⲉⲕⲟⲩⲁϣⲟⲩ ϯⲛⲁⲧⲁⲁⲩ ⲛⲁⲕ ⲙⲱⲛⲟⲛ ⲙⲡⲣϫⲓⲟⲩⲉ

But Abba Arsenius, wishing to benefit his soul, took him into his cell, and said to him, 'Everything that you desire, I will give to you, only do not steal.'

3 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥϯ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛⲭⲣⲉⲓⲁ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲛⲧⲁϥ .

And he gave him everything that he needed.

4 ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲟⲛ ⲁϥϩⲱⲃⲧ .

Still, he went and he stole.

5 ⲛϩⲗⲗⲟ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟⲩⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ϫⲉⲙⲡⲉϥⲗⲟ ⲉϥϩⲱⲃⲧ .

When the old men saw that he did not cease stealing,

they ran after him, saying, 'If a brother is found having a lack in himself from weakness, then it is right to bear this one until he becomes strong.

7 ⲉϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉϥϩⲱⲃⲧ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲥⲉϯⲥⲃⲱ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϥⲧⲙϩⲱ ⲉⲣⲟϥ

But if he steals and is taught but it does not suffice,

8 ϣϣⲉ ⲉⲛⲟϫϥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϫⲉⲧⲉϥⲯⲩⲭⲏ ϣⲁϥⲧⲁⲕⲟⲥ ·

then it is right to cast him out because his shall destroy his soul,

and he shall disturb everyone in this place.'
