1 ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲛϭⲓⲁⲡⲁ ⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲟⲥ ⲡⲛⲟϭ ϣⲁ ⲁⲡⲁ ⲁⲛⲧⲱⲛⲓⲟⲥ
Abba Macarius the Great went to Abba Antony.
2 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥⲕⲱⲗϩ ⲉⲡⲣⲟ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϣⲁⲣⲟϥ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉⲛⲧⲕ ⲛⲓⲙ
And when he had knocked at the door, he [Antony] came to him saying, “Who are you?”
3 ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲇⲉ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲟⲥ ·
And he answered, saying, “I am Macarius.”
4 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥϣⲧⲁⲙ ⲙⲡⲣⲟ ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲁϥⲕⲁⲁϥ ·
And he [Antony] shut the door, went in, and he left him.
5 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥⲛⲁⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲉϥϩⲩⲡⲟⲙⲟⲛⲏ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱⲛ ⲛⲁϥ
When he [Antony] saw his [Macarius's] endurance, he opened [the door] to him.
6 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲣⲟⲧ ⲛⲙⲙⲁϥ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲉⲓⲥ ⲟⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲛⲟⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲉⲓⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲣⲟⲕ ⲁⲓⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲧⲃⲏⲏⲧⲕ
And he rejoiced with him, saying, “Behold, a long time I have desired to see you, for I have heard about you.”
7 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥϣⲟⲡϥ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ϩⲛⲟⲩⲙⲛⲧⲙⲁⲓⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲁϥϯⲙⲧⲟⲛ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛⲧⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛϩⲉⲛⲛⲟϭ ⲛϩⲓⲥⲉ ·
And he received him kindly and made him rest because of his great labors.
8 ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉⲣⲟⲩϩⲉ ⲇⲉ ϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲁⲁⲡⲁ ⲁⲛⲧⲱⲛⲓⲟⲥ ϩⲱⲣⲡ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϩⲉⲛⲕⲟⲩⲓ ⲛⲃⲏⲧ
When evening came, Abba Antony soaked some small palm branches.
9 ⲡⲉϫⲉ ⲁⲡⲁ ⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲟⲥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉⲕⲉⲗⲉⲩⲉ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲧⲁϩⲱⲣⲡ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲙⲁⲩⲁⲁⲧ
Abba Macarius said to him, “Allow me to soak some for myself.”
10 ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ϫⲉ ϩⲱⲣⲡ
He [Antony] said, “Soak.”
11 ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥⲧⲁⲙⲓⲟ ⲛⲟⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲛϣⲟⲗ ⲛⲃⲏⲧ ⲁϥϩⲟⲡϥ ·
And he [Macarius] created a large bundle of palms and he soaked it.
12 ⲁⲩϩⲙⲟⲟⲥ ⲁⲩϣⲁϫⲉ ⲉⲧⲙⲛⲧⲣⲉϥϯϩⲏⲩ ⲛⲧⲉⲯⲩⲭⲏ
And they sat and talked about what is profitable to the soul.
13 ϫⲓⲛⲙⲡⲛⲁⲩ ⲛⲣⲟⲩϩⲉ ⲁⲩⲛⲟⲃⲧⲟⲩ · ⲁⲩⲱ ⲧⲛⲏⲃⲧⲉ ⲁⲥⲃⲱⲕ ⲉⲡⲉⲥⲏⲧ ⲉⲡⲉⲥⲡⲩⲗⲩⲟⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲙⲡϣⲟⲩϣⲧ ·
From the evening hour onward, they wove, and the plaits went down from the cave through the window.
14 ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉϩⲧⲟⲟⲩⲉ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲟⲥ ⲁⲡⲁ ⲁⲛⲧⲱⲛⲓⲟⲥ ⲁϥⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲡⲁϣⲁⲓ ⲛⲧⲛⲏⲃⲧⲉ ⲛⲁⲡⲁ ⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲟⲥ
In the morning, the blessed Abba Antony went in and saw the great quantity of Abba Macarius's palms.
15 ⲁϥⲣϣⲡⲏⲣⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥϯⲡⲓⲛϭⲓϫ ⲛⲁⲡⲁ ⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲟⲥ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉⲁϩⲁϩ ⲛϭⲟⲙ ⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛⲛⲉⲓϭⲓϫ ·
He was amazed and he kissed Macarius's hands, saying, “Great power comes from these hands.”
